Year 2010 in pictures.

All the best or 2011!

Usually, it’s time for a review in the last days of a year. However, the last Flying Sparks set of 2010 is not really a typical review because I selected too much new stuff as well as some more classic tracks. Anyway, the set represents the year from my point of view: musically, personally and professionally, somehow.

Almost everything has been enclosed: Sweet sounds and brute bass storms. Slow and fast beats. Music for sunny days on the beach as well as for dark nights in the club. Mainstream and underground stuff. Downtempo, electro, breakbeat, dubstep, drum’n'bass, house, minimal. Global beats anyway. Originals and covers or remixes. Furthermore, I seem to have a passion for soundtrack covers because there are three tracks in the set again. ;-)

The set begins with a record I rediscovered at home recently: When The Sun Goes Down by Los Chicharrons. It was not easy to discuss the meaning of chicharrons with a Spanish friend. – Anyway, I do not know any Natalia, but the chosen track is a sweet beginning, isn’t it? Cleopatra is more well-known, isn’t she? I guess, she has never been to New York, me neither yet, unfortunately. But, the track by Nickodemus is one of my all-time favourites. We still have hope: The second album Hope And Despair by Radio Citizen has been published recently, I chose Hope with the wonderful female singer Bajka. Kaya Project has a new album, too: Desert Phase is released on Interchill. The track Ummah Oum is featuring Shahin Badar.

Furthermore, new, global, Indian and Arabic influenced bass music by e.g. David Starfire, MIDIval PunditZ, Gaudi, Nasha Experience, Sub Swara. These are artists and projects continuously providing us with good music. New stuff is also available by the creative Up, Bustle & Out and Cornershop.

The London based label Ninja Tune celebrated its 20th birthday this year. Emika‘s release Double Edge is from this label (the Pinch remix is in the set). Pathaan had to quit his radio show on BBC AsianNetwork, his remix for Al-pha-X is just beautiful. The same is true for the Laya Project and Kartick & Gotam: exciting music from the label EarthSync from India.

Dubstep is not a small thing anymore, is it? At least with respect to the number of releases. I put stuff from Pinch, Stenchman, Sukh Knight, Horsepower Production, Skream, Geiom and Various Production into the set.

Some interesting drum’n'bass albums were released this year. My favourites are Subz & Matik, DJ Fresh, Kabuki and Naibu. Thus, the second part of my mix set begins with an explicit dnb session additionally with tracks by dBridge and Calibre.

Finally, the set is finished with house, dancefloor, and dhols: With Uninvited by Freemasons feat. Bailey Tzuke you can levitate and go with the flow… I have heard this track for the first time in a small bar in Brussels in May 2009. When I’ve asked the DJ for the artist, he was astonished: You don’t know it? No, sorry, I did not. Anyway, I did not remember his answer. But, I heard this song recently: It was played in a bar with music from videos… Voila! (The Black Eyed Peas track was also played over and over again in this bar.) Then, another long-time favourite of mine: Tears From The Moon with Sinead O’Connor.

My track of 2010? Feloche‘s interpretation of Singin’ In The Rain (Naive/Ya Basta!), No Time by Gaudi feat. Dr. Israel (Six Degrees Records) as well as the dubstep monster El Topo by Badawi (see Flying Sparks 2010-05-02). Thanks to Joachim Deicke and his Wunderwelt on the radio, because I would have missed Feloche‘s release otherwise, I guess. However, while I’ve checked my photos of 2010 I recognized that I already was in a concert of Feloche because of the Fete de la Musique in Berlin in June… Also big respect to the good radio for the introducing of tracks by Fat & Ugly, Nicolas Jaar, Breakage, dBridge, Badawi etc. and for a good time while listening to the radio…

14 minutes of Peter Gunn as well as relaxed funky breaks and dubstep, some in a Chinese flavour.

There are some songs which are favourites for covers and remixes. Tricky has covered Henri Mancini‘s Peter Gunn theme on his new album Mixed Race. Because I like this theme, I appended some more versions and interpretations: Max Sedgley remixed the interpretation by Sarah Vaughan for Verve, Chris Mancini & Lennart combined this theme with the Pink Panther theme from the film Shot In The Dark, and The Killergroove Formula interpreted the turntable detective in French.

Another example for favourite songs to cover is the Get Carter theme by Roy Budd. There are Indian influenced versions from The Angel Brothers, Bombay Dub Orchestra and Peak (whose interpretation was used in the Flying Sparks session Yippie Yippie Yeah!). Jah Wobble made a Chinese dub version recently. This cover is part of this Flying Spark’s focus on Chinese influenced funky breaks and dubstep. First of all, there is Sa Dingding whose second album was released by Wrasse Records here in springtime. Many songs are sung in Mandarin and are equipped with electronic beats. China goes 21st century at its best. After that I picked some Dubstep tracks built-up on Chinese samples: by Skream, Iron Soul, Rob Sparx (okay, we have rather Japanese than Chinese references here), Bar9, and MRK1. Also, the Brasilian baile funk MC Gi accompanies Origami with Far Eastern samples. The very last track is a cooperation of Shawn Lee with the Chinese Guzheng player Bei Bei on the Into The Wind album.

Furthermore, a dubstep track with a global touch by the drum’n'bass DJ Fresh from his album Kryptonite released in August. Skream combines dubstep with UK funky and drum’n'bass on his new longplayer Outside The Box which is again a musically wide-open release.

The guys behind Transglobal Underground, Hamid Man Tu and Tim Whelan, have always been cooperated with many artists. For the project UNITE (Urban Native Integrated Traditions Of Europe) they cooperated with European artists, e.g. with Stuart A Staples, Jim Moray, Yanka Rupkina, Martin Furey, Recycler, Perunika Trio, Balkan Fanatik, and others. The result of this cooperation is the release A Gathering Of Strangers about emigration, a collection of songs of exile and exiled songs: Most of the music here is some sort of journey; a journey of emigration, transportation, across land or sea and sometimes a journey of the original songwriters themselves.

OMFO (Our Man from Odessa) is an emigrant, too. His track is about the seafaring man (or the spaceman) Sindbad. The jazzy dubstep track by Fredo is taken from the periodic compilation series Shapes from the Brighton based Tru Thoughts label.

This time: music from the U.K., mostly as a pair, new & classic ones, UK Dance & Brit Pop, heroes of the 1990s and beyond.

Norman Cook, better known as Fatboy Slim, brought the track Brimful of Asha by his remix to the dancefloor in 1997. In 2009, Tjindar Singh and Ben Ayers a.k.a. Cornershop have published a great feel good album with Judy Sucks A Lemon For Breakfast which comprises all the best of their sound between Asian Beats and Brit Pop.

The duo Goldfrapp always reinvent themselves anew. This was already the case when they have let succeed the Electro Pop album Black Cherry (2003) to their debut Felt Mountain, then they created the better Confessions On A Dancefloor album (Madonna): Supernature (2005). Last, they did the Folk influenced Seventh Tree (2008). The new release Head First is for the dancefloor again, but this time their tracks are inspired by the 1970′s Disco era, e.g. the beautiful Alive.

Faithless who invented the maybe most cool songline of all times with God Is A DJ , are also still alive by continuously publishing new releases. Though they never reinvent themselves, they continue to spin their catchy sounds further on for the album The Dance and the first single Not Going Home: It’s not over. I’m not going home, til’ I can take you with me. This is not worldshaking, but quite okay.

The Anglo-Indian Brit Pop band Kula Shaker was quite successful in the 1990s (Govinda, Tattva). Then they were vanished before they tried a not so successful comeback in 2007. But now they have published the amazing new Brit Pop album Pilgrim’s Progress with an obituary for Peter Pan (Peter Pan R.I.P).

Dreadzone is also a band from the 1990s (Little Britain 1995, Earth Angel 1997), their sound was/is a mixture of hypnotic Dance, Dub, sometimes Celtic melodies. They’re back with Eye On The Horizon, Yeah Man! is a Breakbeat track with slight Dubstep influences, isn’t it?

Neil Hannon a.k.a. The Divine Comedy delivers the hymn of the Indie disco. Afterwards, the disco is full of Indian Village Vibez by Osmani Soundz (from the first Nasha compilation Eastern Drum & Breaks, 2003). The Blaqstarr remix of XXXO, the most catchy song from the new M.I.A. album Maya, reminds me of the track before. Then, a heavier track: a Drum’n'Bass remix of Paper Planes of the predecessor album Kala. Paper Planes is also known from the soundtrack of the B/Hollywood film Slumdog Millionaire.

Shara Nelson is known from Massive Attacks Unfinished Sympathy (Blue Lines 1991). Now, Calibre has created a Drum’n'Bass remix of the 1998′s Sense Of Danger feat. Shara Nelson which is accompanied with the title track of her 1993 solo album What Silence Knows. This mood is kept by the ambient The Dim Light by the DnB DJ D-Bridge. Before the lights in the disco will be completely switched off, Dreadzone whispers Just Let Go.

After Ascension it’s Ramadan now. Because of this, there is the The Nights of the Ramadan festival in Berlin. The first event of this festival was a concert of the first big band of the Arabic world. The Syrian Big Band played some classic Big Band tunes more or less in an Arabic style, but the band also covered some well-known Pop or Rock tunes, for instance by Led Zeppelin. Being a bit too sedate at first, they became quite impressive afterwards, especially after the break because of the sunset, and after the rain shower. The darling of the public was the beatboxing bassist (I’m the bassist only.), who was bound to an encore. I liked very much the performance of the female singer.

Because of this impression, I was bound to select some Big Band sounds from my archive in turn. I do not have anything from The Syrian Big Band, but the music from the films Murder on the Orient Express, Lawrence of Arabia and Carry On Spying as well as the music by Tommy Dorsey & His Original Orchestra is also quite cool, isn’t it?

While The Syrian Big Band played a Led Zeppelin song, Hector Zazou, Barbara Eramo & Stefano Saletti have published a new album with lots of covers of famous Pop songs in an Arabic style. The album comprises many 1970′s Disco classics like Donna Summer‘s I Feel Love, Y.M.C.A. by The Village People, Stayin’ Alive and Night Fever by the Bee Gees, Anita Ward‘s Ring My Bell as well as Gloria Gaynor‘s I Will Survive. I like this album.

Furthermore, I selected some Arabic Electronica between Techno & House (by The Kasbah Rockers & Bill Laswell, Oryx, Roger Abboud) and Dubstep (L-Wiz). In between some radio sounds from the Palestine, some curious by The Forgotten Fish Memory Orchestra, some reflective by The Forty Thieves Orkestar from London, traditionals from the Iraq, a classic by Natacha Atlas, Breakbeats from Prague by Le Pneumatique who performed a quite cool and phat concert on the “Karneval der Kulturen” (carnival of the cultures) in Berlin on Whitsun 2010, also some Asian and Arabian Breakbeats or Dub sounds from London by Fusing Naked Beats, Jah Wobble and Temple of Sound. The Punk classic Rock The Casbah by The Clash is interpreted by Rachid Taha.

Le Pneumatique @ Carnival of Cultures Berlin, May 23, 2010

Before there will be a new Flying Sparks mix set (soon), here a flashback to one from October 2009: At that time I searched my vinyls to prepare a party and found the following. I hope, you’ll like the mix set between Funk, Big Beats, mashups, Bollywood and Global Beats and with some references to film classics.

The musical trip starts in the East (not the Middle nor the Far East), but in the eastside of Germany, because there is a really cool soundtrack of an espionage TV series (Das unsichtbare Visier) from the late 60′s. After that we listen to some Hollywood classics (Getaway, Get Carter, Enter The Dragon, Shaft), get some tunes from Egypt, Morocco, Bollywood, Peru, and Brazil. Finally, we come back to Europe and listen to some Asian dubstep tracks from the UK.

Please note, the mix set is split into two parts. The break is after the Letta Mbulu classic What Is Wrong With Groovin’?. If anybody has an answer to this, she/he can message me…
