]]> Last weekend, the very last shows of Electro East by DJ Nerm (Shiva Soundsystem) and DJ Pathaan‘s Musical Rickshaw were broadcasted on the British radio station BBC Asian Network. Nerm celebrated 109 tracks in the mix from four years of Electro East within two hours: a small review on Drum’n'Bass, Electro Breaks & Dubstep from the Alternative Underground. Also, Pathaan brought beautiful classics between Global Beats, Eclectic Grooves & Asian Chill. Both have always supported artists from the Global and Asian electronic scene in their shows. Let us hope that we will hear from them in the future wherever again!

Both shows got canned before the BBC plans were published to close BBC Asian Networks. According to Nerm, his show was always regarded as a  “black sheep”: Electro East was clearly a black sheep. The family didn’t understand it, and then dis-owned it. Sadly.

]]> In Großbritannien scheint es die gleichen Diskussionen zu geben wie hierzulande, wenn es um den öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunk geht und um die Frage, was er darf und wozu er da ist. Nun gibt es von der BBC eine Strategieentscheidung, nach der zwei Radiosender, BBC Asian Network und BBC 6 Music, geschlossen sowie das Webangebot der BBC eingeschränkt werden sollen. Interessanterweise trifft es mal wieder Programme abseits des Mainstreams, Programme für “Minderheiten” und mit anspruchsvollen, innovativen Sendungen, die in privatwirtschaftlich orientierten Programmen wenig Berücksichtigung finden.

So bietet BBC Asian Network, ähnlich dem 2008 beim Rundfunk Berlin Brandenburg eingestellten radiomultikulti, Programm für die in Großbritannien vom indischen Subkontinent geprägte Bevölkerung, aber auch Musikprogramme, die die Clubkultur des ehemaligen “Asian Underground” unterstützen: Bobby Friction, Pathaan‘s Musical Rickshaw, Nerm‘s Electro East…

Übrigens und leider: Pathaan und Nerm machen heute Nacht bereits jeweils ihre letzte Sendung.

]]> Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (1948-1997) was a Qawwali superstar, the greatest of his generation (Rough Guide World Music). Qawwali is Sufi music from India and Pakistan with religious lyrics and swinging melodies.
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was born in Pakistan on October 13, 1948. The British radio BBC Asian Network celebrated this date with a Nusrat Day on October 8, 2009. More information can be found on their website: “The BBC Asian Network celebrates the life and music of the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the man that brought Qawwali music to the world.”

His music lives on in the current British Asian club scene, consider the music from Asian Dub Foundation, Fun-Da-mental, MIDIval PunditZ, Gaudi, Ges-E & Osmani Soundz, for instance. Furthermore, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was open for modern musical influences, consider his cooperation with Bally Sagoo and Michael Brooks. He got to know by a wider western audience because of the Massive Attack-Remix of his track Mustt Mustt.

The radio show from Bobby Friction on October 8th, 2009 has celebrated the heritage of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan: “Bobby Friction fuses, remixes and refixes Nusrats biggest hits, and other Qawwali tracks, with dance, electro and rock.” He played remix classics by Massive Attack, Joi, Earthtribe, Black Star Liner, but also newer releases by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, MIDIval PunditZ, Gaudi, Ges-E & Osmani Soundz, and Deepz, for instance.

This show can still be listened to on the homepage of BBC Asian Network for another some days (for seven days after broadcasting). :-)
